Brownelle Mata

Brownelle Mata, age 77 of Purcell passed away peacefully on June 19, 2024. Brownelle Brown was born on August 26, 1946 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the oldest of three children born to Sellman D. Brown and Gladys Cleo (Thomas) Brown. She was primarily raised in the Oklahoma City area, where she attended school and graduated from Central High School in 1964. Upon graduating high school, Brownie decided to further her education and skills. She attended Bacone College in Muskogee for 2 years. By chance, she met a young man named, Lee Norman. They quickly fell in love and were married. Together, the couple raised 2 beautiful children- Battieste and Dionne. During this time in her life, Brownie was primarily a homemaker, spending invaluable time with her children. The love of her life, Lee, passed away unexpectedly leaving her to raise Battieste and Dionne. Later on, Brownie met a man named, Javier Mata. The two became one in marriage, and together they had a son- Ruben. At this time, Brownie was working as a Nurse's Aide at Sunset Estates. She quickly developed a true love for her career and patients, which is what led to her going back to school. Brownie attended Mid America Technology Center, where she graduated and obtained certification as a Licensed Practical Nurse in 1984. She was driven and dedicated to working hard every single day. Brownie continued working at Sunset Estates as a LPN for nearly 30 years until she eventually retired in 2014. She truly was a compassionate, caring, and dedicated nurse. In her free time, Brownie loved reading, watching movies, crocheting, dancing, cooking, and going to Riverwind Casino. She also enjoyed going camping every year with her family in Sulphur, Oklahoma. Brownie was known for collecting her many perfumes and lotions. Brownie was a one-of-a-kind woman with an unforgettable personality. She was energetic, independent, fun, wise, extremely loveable and accepting of everyone. Brownie was a jokester; she loved to bring smiles to people's faces! She truly was the life of every party. Brownie was very proud of her Native American ancestry and proud to be a member of the Chickasaw Nation. Brownie was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and a true friend. She will be dearly missed! She was preceded in death by: her first husband, Lee Norman; parents, Sellman and Gladys Brown; daughter, Dionne Norman; son, Battieste Norman; sister, Gayla Flores and nephew, Armondo Calderon. Brownie is survived by: her son, Ruben Mata of Norman; brother, Rhett Brown and wife Susan of Moore; 8 grandchildren, Nicholas, Noah, Nashoba, Noel, Eleora, Nocona, Sierra, and Laci; 1 great-grandchild, Stetson Mata; 2 nephews, Elias Brown and Sidney Brown, and a host of other family and friends. Funeral Services are scheduled for 10:00 A.M. Monday, June 24, 2024 at Little's Chapel. Burial will follow at Hopping Cemetery. www.wilsonlittle.com
