Carl Edmond Hickman

Carl Edmond Hickman, age 79 of Goldsby, passed away Sunday, April 26, 2015, in Oklahoma City. Carl was born on April 17, 1936 in Ethridge, Tennessee. He was the youngest child of four children born to Riley Hickman and Cora (Nunley) Hickman. After the death of his dad, Carl and his family moved from Tennessee to Oklahoma in 1937, and lived in the communities of Hickory and Davis before settling down in Sulphur. As a young boy, Carl mowed lawns for 25 cents each, and was the local paper boy, delivering the Oklahoma City Times and the Daily Oklahoman. He frequently hung out at Sulphur airport, hoping to get an airplane ride from some of the local pilots. In 1955, Carl joined the United States Air Force, and attended basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, TX. After basic training, Carl was ordered to Biggs Air Force Base in El Paso, Texas, where he was assigned to the 810th Supply Squadron, which was attached to both the 95th Operations Group and 97th Bomb Group-Heavy, Strategic Air Command, under the command of General Curtis LeMay. Carl received an honorable discharge from the Air Force in 1959, and returned to Sulphur where he worked at Willis Price's Service Station until he joined the Sulphur Police and Fire Departments. Fifteen months later in 1960, he was hired full time on the Sulphur Fire Department. In 1961, he married Freida Colleen Self. They have one daughter (Karla) and one son (Carl). The family lived in the Sulphur Fire Station from 1962 until 1973. Carl retired from the fire department in 1981, and then worked at the Oklahoma Veterans Center in Sulphur as a maintenance person. He retired from the Veterans Center in 2000. He moved with his wife to Golbsy, Oklahoma in 2006, and attended the Golbsy Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by: His parents, Riley and Cora (Nunley) Hickman; two brothers, Robert Earl Hickman, and Harold Hickman, and a sister, Imogene Hale; He is survived by: His wife of 53 years, Colleen; A son, Carl Wade Hickman and his wife Jana, of Mustang, OK; A daughter, Karla Hamilton and her husband James of Dickson, OK; 4 grandchildren, Detra Horton, Carrie Ransom and her husband Jonathan, Brittany Clinton and her husband Johnny Clinton, Kelly Hickman; 6 great-grandchildren, Taelynn Holbrook, Cambree Ransom, Xavier Horton, Camryn Ransom, Beaudy Clinton, Jase Ransom and 3 nieces. Funeral Services are scheduled for 10:00 A.M. Friday, May 1, 2015, at the Goldsby Baptist Church in Goldsby, Oklahoma. Interment will be at the Ft. Sill National Cemetery, Elgin, Oklahoma. Arrangements are by Wilson-Little Funeral Home in Purcell.
