Cecil Dean Skaggs

Cecil Dean Skaggs, age 90 of Norman, passed away at home Monday, June 17, 2024. Born August 1, 1933, in Hobart, Oklahoma, he was the 3rd of 4 children born to Cody Dewey Skaggs and Elsie Berneice (Weber) Skaggs. He was raised primarily in Okla. City. He attended high school at Northeast, before graduating from Central High School with the Class of 1951. By chance, he met a young lady named Vernell Schwab while attending services at Dickson Baptist Church. They were the perfect couple, and the rest as they say is history. They eventually married on June 13, 1953. At this time, Cecil was attending the University of Oklahoma where he studied Business and served in the Air Force ROTC. He worked as a construction laborer during the summer and worked for the Daily Oklahoman part time during the semester to support his young family. The young couple moved to Shawnee where they welcomed their son Rick. Cecil worked for Sylvania Electric while finishing his degree, and he graduated with a bachelor's degree in business administration. Cecil answered the call to service, and joined the United States Air Force, and he served his country proudly as a troop carrier pilot and was honorably discharged with the rank of captain. While stationed in North Carolina, they welcomed a daughter Lorie, and their family was complete. Cecil began working for O G & E in Enid, and thus began a rewarding career that spanned more than 31 years, and he retired as Commercial Sales Consultant for the Western District. Cecil was a man of great faith, and also answered the call in his heart to serve the Lord in Music Ministry. They made their home in Enid, Woodward and eventually Norman where he served at Alameda Baptist Church. Away from work, he enjoyed working in his shop where he constructed things for the house and family or was repairing something. He also enjoyed tending to his fish pond he constructed as well as doing yard work. He loved all things OU and was an avid Sooner sports fan and especially enjoyed attending football games. Cecil's greatest joy was his family. He cherished Vernell and the life they built. He was a wonderful husband and father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle and friend. He will be dearly missed! He was preceded in death by: his parents, Cody and Elsie Skaggs and his siblings, Bill Skaggs, Helen Maus and Gene Skaggs. Cecil is survived by: his wife of 71 years, Vernell Skaggs; son Rick Skaggs and wife Susie of Norman; daughter Lorie Webster and husband Terry of Bixby, OK; His pride and joy, grandchildren, Carissa New and husband Graeme of Bixby, David Webster and wife Heather of Carlilse, IA and Duncan Skaggs of Norman; great grandchildren, Zoe, Mathias, Madison, Jackson, Meredith, Maxwell and Amelia and a host of other family and friends. The Skaggs family wishes to express their deepest gratitude and love to the caregivers from Right at Home and Elara Caring for their respectful and attentive care of Cecil so that he might complete his life journey at home. Funeral Services are scheduled for 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, June 25, 2024 at Little's Chapel. Burial will follow at the Hillside Cemetery. www.wilsonlittle.com.
