Dorothy Canary

Dorothy Canary, 92 of Newcastle, went to her heavenly home Friday, March 10, 2023. Born Dorothy Lee Mitchell on October 12, 1930 in Valliant, Oklahoma, she was the only child of Edgar O. Mitchell and Florence E. (O'Donnell) Mitchell. She started school in a two-room school house and later attended Idabel High School, graduating with the Warrior Class of 1948. After high school Dorothy moved to Texas, where she studied at Draughn's Business School, earning her Associate's Degree. She then moved to Oklahoma City and began working for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. A co-worker introduced Dorothy to her brother, Clifford Raymond Canary. Following a whirlwind romance, the two were married three months later. Two children were born to this union, a daughter, Jan, and a son, Eddy. Dorothy and Clifford made their first home in Oklahoma City, but settled in Newcastle in 1964. Dorothy retired from the Federal Aviation Administration where she worked in procurement. No matter where she lived, Dorothy never was far from her country roots. She loved planting and harvesting vegetables from her truck garden and picking fruit from her various fruit trees. She also enjoyed traveling, and was blessed to see much with the NEECA group. She also loved camping, water sports, and fish fries on Lake Texoma with her family and friends. Occasionally she could be found on the back of a Harley Davidson. Dorothy was a woman of great faith. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church, Newcastle, where she enjoyed the great camaraderie of her women's Sunday School Class. She was active with the Church Fellowship Committee and helped with Vacation bible School. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother (Granny), and great grandmother, and will be dearly missed! Dorothy was preceded in death by: her husband Cliff Canary and her parents, Edgar and Florence Mitchell. She is survived by: her daughter, Jan Talkington and husband Mike of Newcastle; her son, Eddy Canary of Newcastle; a stepson, Lindell Canary and wife Cathy of Oklahoma City; her pride and joy, grandchildren Jason Canary of Moore; Josh Talkington and wife Sheri of Edmond; Derek Talkington and wife Chelsey of Oklahoma City; and Tiffany Canary Baumann and husband Josh of Newcastle; 5 great grandchildren; Joe, Jade, Zane, Benjamin and Evelyn, and great great granddaughter, Emma, and host of other family and friends. Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, March 14, 2023 at the First Baptist Church, Newcastle. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Gardens. Family will be receiving friends Monday from 5-7 at Wilson Little Funeral Home ~ Tri City.
