Edith Marie Canoy

Edith Marie (Wood) Canoy April 23, 1940-April 11, 2020 Edith Marie (Wood) Canoy was the second of 4 daughters born to Homer J. Wood and Agnes D. (Moseley) Wood on April 23, 1940 in Tyler, Texas. Those years of childhood and adolescence were spent in her beloved hometown of Tyler. As a schoolgirl she attended Birdwell Elementary, Hogg Junior High, and John Tyler High School. While a student at JTHS, she was a proud member of the Blue Brigade Pep Squad. Edith always, even in those early years, had a keen interest in clothing and fashion. During those student days, she was employed at J.M. Dyer, in Tyler, as a model and clerk. She also had an extraordinary knack for clothing design and was responsible for designing many of her own clothes while still a high school student. On August 18, 1960, Edith was united in marriage, at the East Tyler Baptist Church, to Larry Albert Canoy of Carthage, Texas. From this union came three sons, Larry Russell (Rusty), Ricky Lynn (Rick), and David Randall (Randy). As newly-weds, Edith, Larry, & their emerging family lived in Tyler and Carthage. In 1966, so Larry could take up employment with Skelly Oil Company, the family relocated to Duncan, Oklahoma. Although Edith resided in Duncan for 51 years, Tyler, Texas, The Rose Capital of the World, always held a very special place in her heart and was quite proudly confessed as her hometown. She was Tyler's greatest fan and ambassador!! Even after moving to Duncan, especially during those early years, most weekends and much of the summer, would be spent in Tyler with her family that she missed and loved so very much. Edith was a loving & faithful wife, mother, & grandmother who assumed those roles with great seriousness and vigor. She was an indefatigable housekeeper, and thus redefined the meaning of a spotless home. Everything in her home had its place and was expected to be kept that way. To say that Edith was an incredible cook is a gross understatement of her abilities in the kitchen. She was determined to guarantee that her boys were well-fed and sustained for those busy days of growing up, and the boys, at every stage of life, were always eager to sit at her table and feast upon her delicious meals. Her yard was as well ordered and appointed as the interior of her house. She demanded that the yard be cut and trimmed to her exact standard, no exceptions. Every spring she could be found at the various nurseries around town buying flowers and various plants to beautifully situate in the yard & upon the front and back porches. The beautiful yard that she and Larry were so proud of never ceased to draw the comments & compliments of most who visited or passed by. Edith loved the birds that frequented her well-supplied feeders, especially Bluebirds and Cardinals. Edith was strikingly beautiful, and her physical beauty was enhanced by the beautiful and fashionable articles of clothing that were purchased on her many shopping excursions. She could shop for hours on end, moving at a great rate of speed through the store of choice, taking into account every article of clothing on every rack in the store. She seldom met a store that she didn't like, but she was especially fond of Dillards. When Edith entered the doors of that particular establishment time would come to an absolute stand-still! Beyond the interests of her home and the retail outlets in which she spent vast amounts of time, Edith loved the weekly trip to the local library; she was a voracious reader. On most any day she could be found visiting on the phone with her neighbors and her sons. She was tremendously compassionate and held in her heart a special place for the poor and underprivileged. Going out to eat, particularly in her later years, was something that she greatly enjoyed, especially if the restaurant of choice was the Olive Garden. Edith, Nana as she was affectionately called by her grandkids, had a magnetic smile, was outgoing, talkative, & never met a stranger. She was a Christian and a member of the First Baptist Church of Duncan, Oklahoma. Edith was dearly loved and cherished by her family, whom she provided faithfully for & protected, and was appreciated by many others with whom she shared friendship! Edith was preceded in death by: Her Husband-Larry A. Canoy Her Father-Homer J. Wood Her Mother-Agnes D. Russell Sisters-Pat Gilbreath and Helen Byrum Grandchildren-Ryan T. Canoy and Sarah E. Canoy Edith is survived by: Sons: Rusty Canoy & wife Amy of Lexington, OK. Rick Canoy & Wife, Debra of Aynor, SC. Randy Canoy & Wife, Mendy of Rush Springs, OK Grandchildren: Carrie Canoy, Lindsey Canoy, Allyssa Canoy, Caleb Canoy, Victoria Munn & Tate Canoy Great-Grandchildren: Kael Hobbs, Emmilyn Canoy, Olive Canoy & Henley Canoy Sister: Judie Dion & Husband Roy of Cary, NC Edith is also survived by many nephews & nieces whom she cherished & loved. A special word of thanks is to be extended to Dr. Bryan Dye, the very capable and caring staff at the Lexington Nursing Home & Valir Hospice. Graveside Services will be 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, April 15, 2020 at Duncan Cemetery, Duncan, OK. Arrangements are by Wilson-Little Funeral Home, Purcell, OK.
