Melvin Bennett

Melvin Dewite Bennett took his place in Heaven with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on December 20, 2019. Melvin was born April 9th 1933, in Oklahoma City, OK to Jim "Boss" Bennett and Ruby (Reeves) Bennett. Melvin moved around a lot as a child, moving from Norman, OK to Denton, TX, to Lexington, OK. All together with his Dad "Boss", his step mother, Elsie and his two step brothers, Clarence and Lawrence. At the age of 16, Melvin decided he needed a change of scenery, so he told his dad he was leaving for California with his mother, Ruby and her new husband and Melvin's younger brother, Sonny. With $10 in his pocket, off he went. The family lived in Bellflower for one year before moving to North Hollywood. While living in Bellflower, Melvin met a young lady by the name of Patsy Bagwell. They dated, and stayed in touch with one another while Melvin went into the Navy. In 1952, Melvin joined the U. S. Navy and proudly served his country from 1952 to 1956, during the Korean Conflict. He considered making a career in the Navy, but decided not to when he was offered a job in the electrical maintenance division at Rockwell International in Los Angles. In 1956, Melvin and Patsy reconnected and were soon married. The young couple wed in Yuma, Arizona and lived in Bellflower for a few years before building a home in Lawndale. In 1963, their first child, Melanie Lucille Bennett was born into the family. Then in 1965, Dewite Lee Bennett was born. Now the family was complete. In 1972, the family moved to Torrance, CA and lived there until 1978. At the age of 45, Melvin retired from Rockwell and soon purchased a 20 acre farm, east of Lexington, OK. This was a lifelong dream of his, to build a house and raise his children back in Oklahoma. On Friday evening, with his family by his side, Melvin took his last breath in the home he built some 40 years ago. Melvin's hobbies include fishing as a young man with his mother, Elsie and brothers, Eugene and Harold. He was the happiest when he could use his electrical trade skills in helping his family and friends. With a lifetime of memories, he would be the first to tell you, he lived a blessed life. Melvin deeply loved his family and they loved him. He will be greatly missed. Our loss is heavens gain. Melvin was preceded in death by: His Dad, Jim "Boss" Bennett, Two Mom's, Ruby Bennett and Elsie Bennett, His wife of 64 years, Patsy Bennett, Eight brothers and sisters. He is survived by: Son, Dewite Daughter, Melanie, Granddaughter, Summer, 3 great grandchildren, Autumn, Alyssa and Avin, And one great great granddaughter, Iris. Along with many other nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Friday, December 27, 2019 at Wilson-Little Funeral Home Chapel in Purcell. Interment will be at the Noble I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
