Vern Hood

Vern Hood, age 87 of Watonga, passed away Monday, August 13, 2012. Vern was born March 23, 1925 in Sdney, AR, 1 of 8 children born to Asberry Nealy Hood and Cassie Gertrude (Cannon) Hood. He spent his early childhood in Kennett, Missouri and attended Hemphill Schools. He followed his older brother Ewin to Watonga, OK, where he began working at the ice Plant. It was here that Vern met his one true love; a young lady from Watonga named Kathryn Ann Marshall. They fell in love and were married on July 4, 1950. They made their home in Watonga where together they raised 4 daughters, Barbara, Kathy, Deborah and Susan. Vern worked for both the City of Watonga and Blaine County, where he drove a motor grader. Vern loved the Lord, and was a faithful member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Watonga. He and Nana Kathryn were sponsors for the Youth Program and he served on the Church Board and various committees. For more than 29 years, he served the church as a custodian. Vern loved good ole gospel music. Whether it was a family gathering surrounded by his girls and siblings, or the church choir, Vern loved singing and playing the harmonica and the spoons. For the past 3 years, he has been a resident at the Cimarron Nursing & Rehab Center in Kingfisher. He was preceded in death by: His wife of more than 61 years, Kathryn Hood in September of 2011; His parents, Asberry and Cassie Hood; 2 sisters, Lema Brewer and Lanelle Morris and 3 brothers, Ewin Hood, Ralph Hood and Neal Hood. Vern leaves behind: His daughters, Barbara and husband Earl Underwood of Greenfield, Kathy Storm of Edmond, Deborah Henderson and Susan Kitten, both of Purcell; 2 brothers, Buford Hood of Phoenix, AZ and C.D. 'Buck" Hood and wife Bonnie of Abilene, TX; 8 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren and many other family and friends. Funeral Services are scheduled for 2:00 P.M. Thursday, August, 16, 2012, at the First Church of the Nazarene in Watonga. Burial will follow at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Russell Murray Hospice or to the Watonga Church of the Nazarene.
