Vernell Skaggs

Vernell Skaggs, age 89 of Norman, passed away at home on Monday, March 2, 2026. Harriet Vernell Schwab was born March 20, 1936 in Choctaw, OK, the older of two children born to Harry Clay Schwab and Verna Cynthia (March) Schwab. She was raised in Oklahoma City and attended school at Central High School. While attending a service at Dickson Baptist Church, she met the love of her life Cecil Dean Skaggs. It was love at first sight, and they were later married on June 13, 1953 in the very church they met. The young couple moved to Shawnee, where they welcomed their son Rick. Later, while stationed with the United States Air Force in North Carolina, they welcomed their baby girl, Lorie, and their family was complete. They made their home in Enid, Woodward and eventually Norman. Vernell was at Cecil’s side as he served in the Music Ministry at Alameda Baptist Church in Norman. She was faithful in the church and served in many capacities, voluntarily, or when called. Vernell shared her gift of hospitality, planning church activities and family get togethers, and she especially looked forward to the holidays. She enjoyed bowling, gardening, John Wayne movies and never missed an opportunity to seek out a bargain at the Good Will. She was an excellent seamstress, and shared her many talents with her family and friends. She was always ready to encourage her family in whatever endeavors they chose. Not only was she a woman of great faith; she was also a wonderful wife and mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and great grandmother and a true friend. She will be dearly missed! She was preceded in death by: her husband Cecil Dean Skaggs; her parents, Harry Clay Schwab and Verna Schwab and her brother, Clayton Daniel Schwab. Vernell is survived by: son, Rick Skaggs and wife Susie of Norman; her daughter, Lorie Webster and husband Terry of Bixby, OK; Her pride and joy, grandchildren, Carissa New and husband Graeme of Bixby, David Webster and wife Heather of Carlisle, IA and Duncan Skaggs of Norman; great grandchildren, Zoe, Mathias, Madison, Jackson, Meredith, Maxwell and Amelia, and a host of other family and friends. Visitation 5:00 PM-7:00 PM Friday, March 6, 2026 at Wilson-Little in Purcell. Graveside Services are scheduled for at Hillside Cemetery in Purcell.
