Birdie Faye Akerman

Birdie Faye Akerman age 72 of Cole, OK passed away Thursday, February 12, 2015 at the Select Specialty Hospital in Oklahoma City. She was born August 24, 1942 in Washington, OK. She was the 4th child of ten children born to Joel "Wolf" Andrews and Gracie Gertrude (Madden) Andrews. Birdie grew up and attended school in Washington, OK. She later married the love of her life, Ben Akerman, a young man from Lexington. They were married on January 10, 1959 in Purcell and together they raised six children. They lived in OKC for three years, Lexington for one year, Newcastle for nine years before moving to Cole in 1972, where they live today. As a young girl, Birdie learned how to work hard. She kept that same work ethic throughout her life. She worked hard being a wife, mother and grandmother. She worked at home and outside of the home for many years. In her early years of working she worked several years for Western Electric in OKC and several years for Braums Dairy in Tuttle. She later went to work at the University of Oklahoma where she retired. Birdie loved being outdoors and spending time with her family. She enjoyed working in her vegetable garden, her flower beds, raising rabbits and cows. She loved going to garage sales, sewing, canning and cooking. Some of her favorite times of the years were having her family over and cooking for the holidays. Birdie especially loved it when Ben would bring home another washer of dryer! Her kids and grandkids meant the world to her. There wasn't anything she wouldn't do for them. After visiting with Birdie and Ben, if you ever left hungry, it was your own fault! At the drop of a hat, she would breakout the pots and pans; make a three course meal in no time. Birdie was a very loving and caring person, but she wasn't afraid to tell you what she thought. That was just her nature. She was the best wife, mother and grandmother that anybody could ever ask for. She will be greatly missed by everyone that knew her. Birdie was preceded in death by: Parents, Joel "Wolf" and Gracie Andrews; Two sisters, Evelyn Price and Florence Beller; Two brothers-in-law, Dale Worley and Frank Albert; Infant brother, James Joel Andrews; Infant daughter, Patricia Ann Akerman; Son, Kenneth Akerman; She is survived by: Husband, Ben Akerman of the home; Four children, Margaret Aday and husband Larry of Blanchard, Benny Akerman and wife Debbie of Lexington, Harold Akerman of Blanchard, Laura Baker and husband Bobby of Washington; Eight grandchildren, Amber Clingman, Anthony Lamirand, Lacy Vaughn, Ashley Akerman, Justin Scott, Mariah Bell, Jason Burchfield and April Burchfield; Five great grandchildren, Kryston and Caden Clingman, Westyn Akerman, Addilyn Vaughn and Zack Nelson. One great great granddaughter, Sophie Bell; Four sisters, Juanita Worley of Blanchard, Millie Albert of Washington, Laurie Pfannenstiel of Lexington Merlene Lile and husband Gary of Dibble; Three brothers, Albert Andrews and wife Doris of Purcell, Carl Andrews and wife Betty of Purcell, Gene Andrews of Washington; Also numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, many cousins and a host of other relatives and friends. Graveside funeral services will be 3:00 PM Saturday, February 14, 2015 at the Lexington Catholic Cemetery in Lexington, OK. Arrangements are with Wilson-Little Funeral Home in Purcell.
