Damon E. Carlton

Damon Carlton, age 89 of Lexington, passed away, Thursday, October 9, 2014. Damon Eldon Carlton was born May 23, 1925 in Lawton, OK, the oldest of 3 children born to Robert Frank Carlton and Ethel Allie (Claypool) Carlton. He was raised in the Ninekah and Marlow areas and attended Bray Schools. Damon learned the value of hard work at a very young age. He quit school to help provide for his family. At age 17, he had convinced his mother that he needed to join the Navy. This would turn out to be a career defining move, as Damon served his country proudly for more than 22 years. Along the way he met a young lady from Lawton named Letriece Pearl Roberson, and they were married on March 11, 1948 in Lawton. Together they raised 5 children, Daughter, Patrice, and sons, Damon, James, Kevin and Mike. They moved many times during Damon's military career "following the ships". They eventually settled in Lexington in 1975. He spent some time working for Tyler & Simpson's in Norman and later at Northcutt's Nursery and even drove cars for Murdock's Chevrolet for a time. Damon was a fixture at Ruby's in Purcell, where he enjoyed a good cup of coffee with his many friends. Damon enjoyed working in his vegetable garden and was always looking out for others. He especially looked after his neighborhood widows and widowers, often times bringing them meals and helping them in any way he could. Damon was a wonderful husband and father, grandfather, brother, uncle and a true friend. He was preceded in death by: His parents, Robert and Ethel Carlton and A brother, Robert Carlton. Damon leaves behind: His wife, Letriece, of Lexington; His daughter, Patrice Ashley and husband Kim of Lexington; Sons, Damon Carlton and wife Virginia of Goldsby, James Carlton and wife Frannie of OKC, Kevin Carlton of Lexington and Mike Carlton and wife Reba of Chickasha; Sister, Hattie Jo Hisey and husband Jim of Palm Desert, CA; 5 Grandchildren, Damon James Carlton and wife Cindy of Goldsby, Jacob Carlton and wife Lauren of Little Elm, TX, Tracy Delahay and husband Dan of Shawnee, Joshua Carlton and wife Danee of Goodyear, AZ and Heather Houser and husband Adam of Beggs, OK; 8 Great grandchildren, Avery, Henry, Addison, Brennan, Steven, Daniel, Benjamin and Nathan and A host of other family and friends. Funeral Services are scheduled for 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, October 14, 2014, at the Wilson-Little Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at 2:00 P.M. at the Ft. Sill National Cemetery, in Elgin, Oklahoma. Family has asked in lieu of flowers please make a donation to St. Jude's Children's Research. Arrangements by Wilson-Little Funeral Home of Purcell.
