Obituary: Doris Imogene Hawkins-Trew Doris Imogene Hawkins was born at home in Ingalls, OK on 06/25/37 to Mr. and Mrs. Ollie Ann and Cullen Dawes. Mr. Dawes, being a preacher, felt the family should move to Stillwater, just 10 miles away where he could serve a congregation. Doris’ father died when she was very young. On only one occasion that we know of, when her Mom was not at home, Doris and her friend took out the family car and drove, or rather, “cruised” the streets of Stillwater. She was pretty sure her Mom never found out. During her high school years, Doris was secretary of the Distributive Education Club of America (DECA) and a member of the Stillwater High School band. Her first job was in her sophomore year at Stillwater Laundry. She was excited when the location moved next door to where Eskimo Joe’s is today because she got to hand out dry cleaning to the Oklahoma A&M students. In her Junior year, Doris worked at TG&Y after school, quickly working her way up the ladder from checker to cashier in the office, a stepping stone to her later years in the banking industry. After graduating HS in 1955, she worked at Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in the traffic department for two years. She remained in Stillwater until she and Kenneth Hawkins were married on 06/30/57. The married couple then moved to Guymon, OK. In 1959, Debbie was born while the family lived in Guymon. In 1961, Kenneth was offered a job with the Department of Agriculture in Purcell. He and Doris relocated there and bought their forever home at 428 W. Pierce. Doris found employment with the First American Bank in downtown Purcell and in 1964, a new family member was added….a daughter named Donna. Doris worked as window teller at First American, then head cashier and eventually Assistant Vice President. She was a member of the Okeya Mother’s Club and the Purcell Church of Christ. She retired from the First American Bank & Trust in 1991 and she and Kenneth traveled more often to Texas to visit their two daughters and granddaughter. Perhaps one of the most cherished titles Doris enjoyed was that of “Mrs. Santa”. From 1984-1994. Kenneth and Doris created their Christmas yard for friends and members of the community. They spent countless hours tending to animated decorations, handing out candy canes to passers-by and exchanging hellos with old and new friends. Doris so enjoyed the Facebook posts each Christmas from those who had driven by and how much pleasure it gave families over the 10 years. For almost 50 years, Kenneth and Doris supported the Purcell Dragon basketball teams. They had their own “church pew” in the stands and cheered on decades of athletes, including the years at the new gym built just a few blocks from their home. The two were given a personalized basketball by the 2009-2010 Dragon team for their ongoing devotion to PHS Dragon basketball. In December of 2010, Doris’ husband Kenneth passed away after 53 years of marriage. Her grief eventually turned to happiness when in 2012, she rekindled her friendship with a high school romance. Eddie Trew and Doris married in 2013 and the two enjoyed many vacations together. In 2019, they moved to Texas to be close to Doris’ family. They celebrated seven years together. Eddie passed in 2020 and Doris once again became a widow. Doris was a social butterfly and a woman of great faith. She would light up every room. She and her daughters were a fun trio. Never a dull moment. When Purcell HS Reunions occurred, Doris was in tow and met up with dear classmates of both Debbie and Donna. Whether it was a shopping day, holiday or just for fun……Doris was 100% in! She was a woman of faith and took delight in sharing that with others. She prayed each night for her friends and family and those on her prayer list. Doris is preceded in death by her parents, Cullen and Ollie Ann Dawes and half-sisters Frances, Lilah and Mildred. She is survived by daughters Debbie (Ronnie) of Midlothian, TX, and Donna (Mike) of Weatherford, TX, and granddaughter Cami (Loren & Julian) of Fort Worth, TX, as well as several nieces and nephews.
