Johnny Lee McWethy August 28, 1946 – September 6, 2026 Johnny Lee McWethy, 80, of McLoud, Oklahoma, passed away Sunday, September 6, 2026, at St. Anthony Hospital in Oklahoma City, surrounded by a lifetime of memories and the love of the family who meant everything to him. Johnny was a man who lived with intensity, determination, and heart. He could be strong-minded and fiercely driven, but those who knew him best also knew his kindness, loyalty, gentleness, and willingness to help. If someone needed him, Johnny showed up. Helping people was not something he needed recognition for. It was simply part of who he was. That natural “go-getter” spirit carried him through his work, his interests, and most importantly, through the way he cared for the people he loved. Born August 28, 1946, Johnny was the youngest of three children born to Jewel Dean McWethy and Aletha Ernesteen (Julian) Sinclair. He began school in Purcell, Oklahoma, and later graduated from Classen High School in Oklahoma City. Johnny’s working life reflected the same independence and determination that defined him personally. Before entering the investigation business, he worked in several fields, including shoe and vacuum-cleaner sales and automobile sales. He found his calling in process serving, vehicle recovery, and private investigation. By 1974, he built J Mac Investigations and Recovery, where his independent nature, persistence, resourcefulness, and ability to read people served him well. Known by many as “Johnny Mac,” he approached his work with confidence, grit, and the belief that there was usually a way to get the job done. His years as an investigator suited him. He was observant and not afraid of a challenge. His investigative work included surveillance, legal process serving, and vehicle recovery, and he developed a reputation for the kind of old-school ingenuity that existed long before GPS and modern technology changed the profession. Still, the work he was proudest of was the life he built with his family. Johnny loved his six children deeply. He was proud of each of them, proud of the families they created, and especially proud of being PaPa. His 13 grandchildren were his pride and joy. There was a tenderness in that part of Johnny that those closest to him knew well. Johnny was also a teacher in the everyday sense of the word. He knew how to fix cars, solve problems, work with his hands, and figure things out, and he passed those lessons along to the people he loved. He taught life skills, independence, resourcefulness, and the value of figuring things out for yourself. Much of what he taught was not spoken, it was learned by watching him. Some of the best memories of Johnny came away from work. He had plenty of passions of his own. Johnny was an excellent marksman and avid firearms collector with an impressive knowledge and experience in reloading ammunition. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially when he could share those days with his boys, family or his friends. He loved playing pool. And anyone who knew Johnny well knew about his fondness for going “pawn shopping.” For Johnny, an afternoon wandering through pawn shops never knowing what interesting treasure he might find could be an adventure all its own. Those ordinary moments became the important ones, the fishing trips, hunting trips, conversations over a car that needed fixing, games of pool, time spent teaching one of his children how something worked, or simply being together. Johnny lived with strength, purpose, and heart. He was a wonderful father and grandfather, a beloved brother and uncle, and a true friend. He could be determined and uncompromising when circumstances called for it, but underneath that toughness was a gentle and generous man whose loyalty ran deep. If Johnny cared about you, you knew it not necessarily because he said it every day, but because he showed up. His presence will be remembered in the countless ordinary moments that now mean so much, a fishing trip, a backyard conversation, a game of pool, a car being worked on, or a story that begins with, “Dad used to…” Johnny is survived by his children: Cristy McWethy of Suffolk, VA; Travis and Crystal McWethy of Oklahoma City, OK; Todd and Megan McWethy of Newalla, OK; Lance and Katie McWethy of Moore, OK; Kayla and Sean Hemingway of Oklahoma City, OK. He is also survived by his sister, Janet Brinlee of Moore; his brother, Larry McWethy and wife Linda of Moore; his beloved 13 grandchildren; and many extended family members, longtime friends, and others whose lives were made better simply because Johnny was part of them. Johnny was preceded in death by his son, Johnny Lee McWethy II; his grandson, Johnny Ray McWethy; and his parents, Aletha Sinclair and Jewel McWethy. For those who loved him, there will be an unmistakable absence now. Johnny lived big, loved hard, and left a lasting imprint on the people fortunate enough to know him. His family will miss his strength, his stories, his humor, his knowledge, but the lessons he taught and the love he gave will remain with his family and friends for generations. Above everything else, Johnny Lee McWethy was a man who loved his family. He was their Dad. He was their PaPa. He was their Brother. He was "Johnny Mac." And he will be deeply loved, deeply missed, and remembered in the lives of the people who knew him best. Viewing will be held 9:00 AM – 7:00 P.M., Friday September 11, 2026 with the family receiving friends from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 19, 2026, at Little’s Chapel. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery.
