Peggy Jean Mattingly

Peggy Jean Mattingly was born to Johney Burse and Barbara Anna (Melton) Maynard, in Purcell, OK, on January 17, 1931. She stepped into the presence of Jesus surrounded by her children on March 30, 2026, at the age of 95, in Purcell, OK, less than 1 mile from where she was born. Peggy grew up in Washington, OK, where she helped in house and on the farm. She graduated from Washington High School in 1948. She was a good student, enjoying Home Economics and lettering in basketball. After graduation, she lived with her aunt and uncle, Curt and Della Melton, working at Don’s Rexall Drug store in Purcell. It was at this time she met the love of her life, Cleveland Mattingly. Cleveland left for the Army and Peggy returned home to help at the farm. One year later she took a job at Bell Telephone Office in Norman. She worked here as a switchboard operator until Cleveland was home for a 30-day leave in July. It was then they married on August 6, 1953. She fully embraced military life by living at Ft. Sill, OK; Ft. Bliss, TX; Ft. Devens, MA; Bamberg & Herzogenaurach, Germany; Ft. Bragg, NC; Fukuoka, Japan; and Ft. Meade, MD, before retiring in 1969 in Washington, OK. Together they raised 5 children: Johnny Wayne, Mark Alan, Patricia Ann, Timothy Jay, and Stephen Kirk. Peggy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. She was a homemaker and her greatest joy was her family. She loved helping and babysitting the grandkids, which created lifelong bonds. She will be dearly missed. One thing she enjoyed the most was sports. She attended many Washington High School events and loved her OU Sooners. Peggy was a faithful and very active member of First Baptist Church of Washington. She taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for over 30 years, was active in Women’s Missionary Union, served as the wife of a deacon by preparing funeral dinners and delivering numerous meals to fellow church members. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cleveland Mattingly; her parents, Johney Burse and Barbara Anna (Melton) Maynard; a sister, Joan (Maynard) Parker; a brother, Kendall Maynard; and a great-granddaughter, Willow Boggs. She is survived by her children: Johnny and Holly Mattingly of Purcell, OK; Mark and Beverly Mattingly of Elgin, OK; Patricia and Mark Delich of Lansing, KS; Tim and Shelley Mattingly of Oklahoma City, OK; and Stephen and Heidi Mattingly of Kissimmee, FL. She also leaves behind her siblings: Ronnie Maynard of Purcell, OK; Bonnie (Maynard) Ragland of Tulsa, OK; and Ricky and Jane Maynard of Goldsby, OK; as well as 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
